Description
Venclexta (Venetoclax): Overview, Usage, and Precautions
Overview
Venclexta (generic name: venetoclax) is a medication used to treat certain types of cancer, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Venetoclax works by inhibiting a protein that helps cancer cells survive, thereby slowing or stopping their growth.
How to Use
Before starting Venclexta, carefully read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist, and review it each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
- Water Intake: To reduce the risk of side effects, drink 6 to 8 glasses (approximately 56 ounces/1660 milliliters) of water daily, starting two days before your first dose, on the day of your first dose, and every time your dose is increased.
- Administration: Take Venclexta by mouth, with a meal and water, as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. Swallow the tablets whole—do not chew, crush, or break them.
- Missed Dose: If you vomit shortly after taking a dose, do not take an additional dose that day. Resume your regular dosing schedule the next day. If you miss a dose and it’s been less than 8 hours, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s been more than 8 hours, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed one.
Dosage and Precautions
Your dosage will be based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To minimize side effects, your doctor may start you on a low dose and gradually increase it. Ensure you take this medication regularly at the same time each day to maximize its effectiveness.
- Grapefruit and Citrus Products: Avoid consuming grapefruit, Seville oranges, or starfruit while on Venclexta, as they can increase the risk of side effects.
Possible Side Effects
- Common Side Effects: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and headaches are possible. Nausea and vomiting may be severe, so your doctor might prescribe medication to manage these symptoms. Eating smaller meals and limiting activity can help reduce discomfort.
- Serious Side Effects: Venclexta can increase the risk of infections or exacerbate existing ones. Seek medical attention if you notice signs of infection (e.g., persistent sore throat, fever, chills, or cough), easy bruising/bleeding, or symptoms related to tumor lysis syndrome (e.g., flank pain, changes in urination, muscle spasms).
Warnings & Precautions
Before starting Venclexta, inform your doctor if you have any allergies or a history of infections or liver disease. Due to the increased risk of infections, avoid contact with people who have contagious diseases like chickenpox or the flu. Consult your doctor before receiving vaccinations or coming into contact with individuals who have recently been vaccinated with live vaccines.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Venclexta may harm an unborn baby, so effective contraception is recommended during treatment and for at least 30 days after stopping the medication. It is not known whether venetoclax passes into breast milk, so breastfeeding while on this medication is not advised.
Storage
Store Venclexta at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Properly dispose of the medication when it is no longer needed or has expired—consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company for guidance.
Drug Interactions
Certain medications can affect how Venclexta works or increase the risk of side effects. Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use, including prescription and nonprescription drugs, as well as herbal supplements. Notable interactions include azole antifungals, HIV protease inhibitors, macrolide antibiotics, rifamycins, and drugs used to treat seizures.
In Case of Overdose
If an overdose occurs and symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing develop, call 911 immediately. For less severe symptoms, contact a poison control center at 1-800-222-1222 (US) or a provincial poison control center (Canada).
